And Abraham said to God, “Oh, that Ishmael might live before You!” Gen 17:18
He was on the verge of becoming 100 years old. He lived a full life full of travel, making new acquaintances, acquiring land, livestock, gold, and silver. He was quite financially well off.
Now God promises him a son through his wife, Sarah, who is 90 years old herself.
Abraham cannot conceive the idea of having children with Sarah. After all, in all the years of marriage she has yet to get pregnant.
He has Ishmael, the son by a servant. However the son of a servant is a servant himself. (Galatians 4:21-31)
In the midst of doubt and unbelief, Abraham thinks Ishmael is the answer.
He is willing to settle for less than God desires to give.
It’s not unique with Abraham. How often are we willing to settle for less than God desires to give.
He is a good, good Father. He wants to bless you abundantly. (Matthew 7:7-12)
First, He wants you have salvation. He provided a way!
God desires to hear from you daily. Do not limit your prayers to meals and bedtime. Talk with Him throughout the day and seek His guidance.
He wants you to experience abundant living. (John 10:10a)
And that’s just the surface. God wants so very much more for you.
Don’t settle for an Ishmael.
