Memorable Scripture: 7 abominations

Proverbs 6:16-19
These six things the Lord hates,
Yes, seven are an abomination to Him:
A proud look,
A lying tongue,
Hands that shed innocent blood,
A heart that devises wicked plans,
Feet that are swift in running to evil,
A false witness who speaks lies,
And one who sows discord among brethren.

Great words of wisdom fill the Book of Proverbs. I could write something about every one of them but this is about scripture that has stuck in my memory over the years.

Today’s scripture always fascinated me. It gives a great insight into the mind and heart of God and the sin and transgressions that really matter to Him. In fact, it says God hates them.

Pride tops this list. Pride does not allow any consideration for others. It is self-centered and self-serving. It is the downfall of Lucifer. (Isaiah 14:12-15)

Two types of lying are listed here – a lying tongue and a false witness that speaks lies.
The first person speaks lies to protect him or herself – to keep out of trouble.
The second, the false witness, speaks lies to harm another – to get them in trouble.

Taking innocent life is murder. I am forced to add that unborn children are totally innocent. Many hands go into taking the lives of the unborn and it dates back to seven Supreme Court Justices in 1973.

Premeditation is on the list when it concerns wickedness. These kind of people want to do something to others rather than something for them.
I’ve found it’s just as easy to premeditate a good act of kindness for someone.

Are you quick to join evil? You might answer no but do you join in with talking evil about someone at the office? Are you swift to put down someone with the others?
Avoid this by refusing to join the others. Rather, tell them that prayer is the best path.

The final abomination can easily become the sum of all the others. If you commit the others you will cause hard feelings, divisions, jealousy, and worsening attitudes among those around you.

The follower of Christ should avoid any of these abominations. When you set aside your pride and truly follow the leading of the Holy Spirit, then it becomes impossible to commit these sins.
