Isaiah 8:14
He will be as a sanctuary,
But a stone of stumbling and a rock of offense
Another Messianic scripture quoted by Jesus in Luke 20:17-19, referred by Paul in Romans 9:33, and used by Peter in 1 Peter 2:8.
Merriam-Webster defines a stumbling block as:
1 : an obstacle to progress 2:: an impediment to belief or understanding
This perfectly describes the Savior.
Unbelievers trip over Him on the way to heaven. People strong in their faith of Buddha, Mohammed, or any other false deity, find Him an impediment to their belief.
Even some Christians trip over Christ from time to time because their Christian belief does not align perfectly with His.
I’ve stepped on a stumbling block from time to time. I’ve had a stone bruise on the bottom of my foot from stepping on a stone I did not see. The only person I became angry with was myself for not looking where I was going.
You can say the same thing about Christ – if you trip over Him, don’t get angry at God just because you’re not watching where you are going.
