Memorable Scripture: Running Away

Jonah 1:1-3
Now the word of the Lord came to Jonah the son of Amittai, saying, “Arise, go to Nineveh, that great city, and cry out against it; for their wickedness has come up before Me.” But Jonah arose to flee to Tarshish from the presence of the Lord. He went down to Joppa, and found a ship going to Tarshish; so he paid the fare, and went down into it, to go with them to Tarshish from the presence of the Lord.

The prophet did not want to go to Assyria. He did not like the Assyrians. They were a ruthless nation that conquered, tortured, and killed those nations they overran.
Perhaps Jonah thought, “if God is going to destroy them he doesn’t need me to cry out against their wickedness. Just do it.”
So Jonah went the opposite way to get away from God.
He was willing to pay his own way on a ship so he could get away from the presence of God.
However, you cannot run away from God.
You cannot cruise away from God.
You cannot pay your way away from God.
God envelopes the entire universe. All things were made by Him and through Him and all things consist because of Him.
There is no getting away.
Are you running away from God?
It did not work for Jonah. It won’t work for you.
Better for you to run to God. If you draw close to Him, He will draw close to you.
It’s a better way!
