1 Corinthians 10:13
No temptation has overtaken you except such as is common to man; but God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will also make the way of escape, that you may be able to bear it.
Everyone has heard of this scripture.
It’s one of the most misquoted verses of the Bible.
You’ve heard it from grandparents, parents, and some of the elder ladies of the church.
And what did all of them say?
“God won’t put more on you than you can bear!”
Now read the scripture again and compare it.
It’s heavily skewed and doesn’t say what God says.
First it’s about temptation, which is common to man. That is, everyone is tempted in the same or similar ways.
As for you, God does not allow temptation to overwhelm you without a way of escape. That escape is through Jesus, prayer, and the word of God.
With the help of Christ I am able to bear the temptation.
So, to me, this verse says nothing about keeping you from temptation but allowing Christ to render the temptation ineffective.
It’s all up to you!
You can give it or you can pray, seek Christ, and turn away from the temptation.
It’s not always easy.
Temptation knows your Achilles heel and your heart!
Christ knows your temptations too and was tempted Himself and was without sin.
He answered temptations knock with the word of God and prayer.
You can too!
