Ephesians 6:1-4
Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. “Honor your father and mother,” which is the first commandment with promise: “that it may be well with you and you may live long on the earth.”
And you, fathers, do not provoke your children to wrath, but bring them up in the training and admonition of the Lord.
Society has just about thrown this verse out the window.
Children have become very disrespectful, belligerent, obnoxious, and rude to their parents and other adults.
As a result we have a generation with no respect for authority.
I remember a time when our church youth leaders were managing the local theater. I was in the lobby talking to Kay behind the candy counter.
Some boys were making a lot of noise on the other side of the lobby and he asked me to tell them to quiet down.
I walked over and told them.
One of the young men looked at me and told me, “I don’t like people telling me what to do!”
I pointed at Kay and said, “She’s the manager and she told me to tell you to quiet down!”
He repeated he didn’t like people telling him what to do.
That was a young man with no respect for authority. I thought someday he would get into an argument or fight with someone that tried to tell him what to do and he’d get in trouble or killed. No more long life on the earth.
Lack of respect for parents or authorities leads to a lack of respect for God, and we see a lot of that today.
The root of this disrespect is partially the fault of parents.
Many families have no father figure and many do not raise the kids in the Lord.
Or they try but school, friends, and video games take away all that training.
James Dobson once said, “A generation of half believers will raise a generation of un-believers! We cannot afford to lose a generation!”
Yes, we see a generation of wastrels in front of us. The modern prodigals who haven’t returned to the Father… Yet.
