Memorable Scripture: The Bluff

1 Peter 5:8 Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour.

I met a lion once.
A coworker and I were doing phone work at the Ellen Trout Zoo in Lufkin one summer day.
There was nothing between us and the back of the lion cage.
The king of the beasts was lying down by the rear of the cage, so we wandered over.
I remember bending over and looking in his mouth.
It was a hot morning and the lion was panting.
It was huge, not just the teeth and all, but the actual opening of his mouth.
His paws were bigger than my hands.
Suddenly the lion stood up and lunged towards the bars of his cage, where we knelt.
He only moved perhaps five feet but I’ve never seen anything move that quickly towards me.
The two of us jumped back twenty feet.
Even though there were bars between the lion and us, it was very scary.
He got in his bluff on us!
Satan has a bluff on us too.
He is caged by the power of the cross and the resurrection of Christ.
Defeated!
Still, he manages to chew up the lives of unsuspecting and unknowing souls.
Do not let yourself become terrorized by him.
As the next verse says, “Resist him, steadfast in the faith.” (1 Peter 5:9)
