Memorable Scripture: Flesh, Eyes, & Life

1 John 2:16 For all that is in the world—the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life—is not of the Father but is of the world.

I remember hearing this verse in a sermon over 40 years ago.
The preacher used the temptation of Eve as an illustration.
Gen 3:6 So when the woman saw that the tree was good for food (lust of the flesh), that it was pleasant to the eyes (lust of the eyes), and a tree desirable to make one wise (pride of life), she took of its fruit and ate.
Jesus was also tempted in much the same way.
He was tempted with bread while He was hungry – the lust of the flesh.
Satan tempted Him by showing Him the kingdoms of the world – lust of the eyes.
Satan also asked Jesus to jump from the top of the Temple to prove He was the Messiah – the pride of life.
Temptation leading to sinning against God always happens this way – the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and pride of life.
Jesus demonstrated for you how to resist temptation by keeping your heart and mind on the word of God.
