Revelation 2:4 Nevertheless I have this against you, that you have left your first love.
You have left your first love – a very well-known phrase.
As you read about the Ephesian church you find many compliments.
Evidently, they had some good works and patience.
They could not stand evil and exposed fake apostles.
They had the stamina to labor for the Lord.
All these things are good.
It seems they did everything right.
Yet, the Lord said, “You have left your first love!”
Years before John heard and wrote these words, the apostle Paul had this to say in 1 Cor 13:1-3 – Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I have become sounding brass or a clanging cymbal. And though I have the gift of prophecy, and understand all mysteries and all knowledge, and though I have all faith, so that I could remove mountains, but have not love, I am nothing. And though I bestow all my goods to feed the poor, and though I give my body to be burned, but have not love, it profits me nothing.
You can do everything right as a Christian but if you don’t have love it really means nothing.
Ouch!
This looks like the case with this first church.
What is the remedy?
Revelation 2:5 Remember therefore from where you have fallen; repent and do the first works.
