Memorable Scripture: A Big Place

Revelation 21:16 The city is laid out as a square; its length is as great as its breadth. And he measured the city with the reed: twelve thousand furlongs. Its length, breadth, and height are equal.

The great city, the holy Jerusalem has always fascinated me.
It descends out of heaven from God and is composed of the most beautiful stones, gems, and precious metals.
What has always stood out is the size.
A furlong is 1/8 of a mile by our standard.
For the Greeks, the word is stadion, which indicated a racecourse or a stadium, in which runners raced.
So it is difficult to be certain if the same distance is meant as an English furlong.
If so, and my calculation is correct, the city is 1500 miles long, wide, and high.
The Bible I use has a footnote of around 1300 miles.
It would easily cover 1/2 of the United States.
It seems that such a city could exist because it would also be 1300-1500 miles high – a big place.
Of course, we are going by the laws of physics, time, and space.
Who knows what God has in store in the new heaven and new earth.
Those laws may no longer apply.
As I said, I am not sure my figures are correct or comparable to what John saw.
Sufficient to say, God has something wonderful for those placing their trust in Christ.
