Do you have the courage to stand for Christ – to stand for virtue and morality?
Christians are redeemed by Christ but not immune from temptation. But with the help of the Holy Spirit it is easier to fight off temptations.
So do you have the courage to face temptation and say, “No!”?
Things like church camp or revival can renew a Christian with a revitalized relationship with God. Such has been the case with many in my church.
Then it’s back to work or school where there are plenty of temptations and people to present them to you.
Keeping yourself immersed in God’s word and prayer is the only way to fight temptation.
Take the case of Joseph.
This young man was favored by his dad and despised by ten other brothers, who eventually sold him into slavery into another country.
He had one thing going for him – the Lord was with Joseph. Gen 39:2
Even as the Lord is with him the day came when temptation presented itself.
Joseph was a very handsome and well-built young man, and Potiphar’s wife soon began to look at him lustfully. “Come and sleep with me,” she demanded.
But Joseph refused. “Look,” he told her, “my master trusts me with everything in his entire household. No one here has more authority than I do. He has held back nothing from me except you, because you are his wife. How could I do such a wicked thing? It would be a great sin against God.” Gen 39:6-9
This young man was faced with the same temptations that many young men and women face today. Here was a woman that was willing to physically give herself to him. However Joseph had the courage to resist and simply walked away!
What is interesting is he viewed this as sin even before there was a Law that said you must not commit adultery. Ex 20:14
Now the Bible gives instruction about all kinds of sexual sins. Today, many don’t give a second thought to sex before marriage (fornication), lust, porn, and much more. The are every day occurrences supported by the media and entertainment industries.
Joseph knew to give in would be a sin against the master of the house and a “great” sin against God.
Now your own temptation may not be sex. Perhaps your temptation is drugs or alcohol. It could be some seemingly innocent things – things like obscene stories, foolish talk, and coarse jokes. Eph 5:4
Now is the time to get rid of anger, rage, malicious behavior, slander, and dirty language. Col 3:8
There are many other “small” things we do that are not pleasing to God.
Again, can you stand strong and represent Christ every day? Say “YES, I WILL!” and, like Joseph, have the courage to resist.
Tomorrow I will continue with more on this subject.
