Now the Lord had prepared a great fish to swallow Jonah. And Jonah was in the belly of the fish three days and three nights.
One of the most important verses in the Bible and one of the most well known.
I’ve read many naysayers doubt the validity of this but keep in mind God prepared this fish for this task.
The fish prepared Jonah for the task.
Imagine the feeling of being swallowed like that. The darkness. The wetness. The weeds wrapping around his head (vs 5). Not being able to breathe.
The inside of a large fish is not place for a claustrophobic!
How can someone survive?
Maybe he didn’t. Perhaps he died.
The dead can cry out to God. The rich man cried out to God. (c.f. Luke 16:24)
Jesus said, “For as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of the great fish, so will the Son of Man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth.” Matt 12:40
Jesus was dead for three days and night so perhaps Jonah was too.
He cried out to God in repentance, worship, and praise.
So the Lord spoke to the fish, and it vomited Jonah onto dry land. Jonah 2:10
Now Jonah is prepared and ready to go to Nineveh.
Bad things happen!
Although it may depress you, don’t let it destroy you.
You may want to give up, but keep going.
Let it prepare you, remold you, and remake you into something better.
