“You have heard that it was said, You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’ But I say to you, love your enemies, bless those who curse you, do good to those who hate you, and pray for those who spitefully use you and persecute you,
The saying, used by Jesus, was one of logic. The Law stated you shall love your neighbor as yourself (Lev 19:18) therefore, thought the Jews, you must hate your enemy.
It was a common saying everyone knew.
However, Jesus once again turned it around and asked the people to do more for their enemies than they would normally do for their neighbors.
Pray for them.
If you only treat your friends like this, there really isn’t a reward. Anyone can do that!
Go above and beyond to help someone.
Paul would later say, “If your enemy is hungry, feed him; If he is thirsty, give him a drink; For in so doing you will heap coals of fire on his head. Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.” Rom 12:20-21
The purpose is a perfected life! Matthew 5:48- Therefore you shall be perfect, just as your Father in heaven is perfect.
